Fresno County, CA – On the morning of Thursday, June 25, 2026, a single-vehicle collision resulted in a fatality after a car struck a rock embankment, caught fire, and exploded near Hume Lake, according to KSEE/KGPE, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 9:30 AM on Hume Lake Road, south of Highway 180.
Authorities said the driver was traveling down Hume Lake Road when the vehicle veered off the east side of the roadway and crashed head-on into a rock embankment. The impact caused the car to catch fire and then explode, with witnesses reporting a loud explosion and dark, oily smoke in the area.
Officers arrived to find a burned-out Toyota sedan with a person’s body inside. CAL FIRE and Sequoia National Forest dispatch were notified and responded.
A heavy-duty tow truck with approximately 200 feet of cable was requested to recover the vehicle. The National Forest closed Hume Lake Road at Highway 180 during the response. The coroner was notified and responded to the scene.
The identity of the deceased had not been officially released at the time of reporting. It was unknown whether the driver was affiliated with Hume Lake Christian Camps, which was in session at the time.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the California Highway Patrol Fresno Area office. The investigation remains ongoing.
Single-Vehicle Collisions
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s comparative negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages through a wrongful death claim.
