Los Angeles roads are home to some unbelievable traffic dangers each day. And Los Angeles County Freeways carry the most careless, reckless drivers, and the highest risk for accidents. If local interstates aren’t jammed packed with distracted drivers, the lanes are often filled with reckless motorists going 30 miles per hour over the limit.
Maison Law of Los Angeles decided to collect the most recent data on freeway accidents in Los Angeles for a 2026 study. We thought it was a good way to confront L.A. drivers with the number of accidents and preventable deaths that their carelessness causes each year. Hopefully, the stark reality of the toll they take can convince drivers to slow down and pay attention.
The Average Number of Fatalities a Year on Los Angeles Freeways
California’s Transportation Injury Mapping System (TIMS) data shows that I-10 actually saw the most tragic freeway deaths in 2025. However, over the past five years, The 5 (Golden State Freeway/Santa Monica Freeway) has actually averaged the most fatal accidents annually.
I-5 was the scene of nearly 30 deaths a year between 2020 and 2024. The I-10 and I-110 have a lower average, but still reach discouraging accident fatality rates each year.

The data shows that the I-5 is the deadliest route through Los Angeles and L.A. County. As we’ll see in part below, it unsurprisingly has recorded the most serious collisions in recent years as well.
Comparing the Fatality Statistics of Los Angeles County Freeways
TIMS has released its data for traffic accidents in Southern California for 2025. The results show that I-10 and the I-110 were the most life-threatening routes to drive for the year.
These roadway fatality statistics are accurate as of the second week of April, 2026. However, these figures can and will change as late-arriving data from 2025 continues to be added.

To put the fatality rates in perspective, our researchers pulled the data on the number of serious accidents along each stretch of freeway in 2025. This helps illuminate the important fact that freeways with the most traffic and accidents don’t always have the most fatalities to report. The numbers fluctuate from year to year, and any freeway can provide a frightening and deadly trip for motorists.
According to TIMS, I-5 (Santa Ana/Golden State Freeway) recorded the most serious accidents (accidents involving injury) in Los Angeles County in 2025. The freeways saw 1,559 such accidents in 2025. That was just slightly higher than 2024’s serious accidents, which topped out at 1,545 incidents.

- The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) named Freeway 5 as the most heavily traveled route in the nation. By their figures, the stretch from Santa Ana and through Los Angeles carries 504,000 vehicles a day.
Hoping for Safer Trips on Los Angeles Freeways in 2026 and Beyond
If you suffer a serious injury in a Los Angeles or L.A. County accident, and another driver’s mistake was to blame, a lawyer can often protect your case and earn you more. With higher medical bills, insurers often try to blame you for what happened, no matter who the evidence points to. Your lawyer blocks these tactics and can also fight to get the maximum in support you’ll need to make a full recovery.
