Fresno, CA — On Friday, October 9, 2026, Fresno Police arrested 30-year-old Mariah Irion in relation to a fatal pedestrian hit-and-run, according to KSEE/KGPE.
According to Fresno PD, after multiple reports of a pedestrian collision, officers were sent to the crash site at McKinley Avenue and Normal Avenue at approximately 8:30 PM on the night of Sunday, September 13.
There, they found a man lying in the road, unresponsive, and the life-saving efforts of police, EMS, and firefighters were unable to save him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The pedestrian who lost his life was determined to be 78 years old, although previous reporting incorrectly stated that he was in his 80s. His name has not been released at this time. According to investigators, at the time of the collision, the victim was pushing a shopping cart across the street.
With the assistance of an Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR), Fresno police were able to locate the car abandoned in a residential area northeast of the crash, concealed underneath multiple tarps. The tarps were reportedly held in place by rocks taken from a nearby home.
Uncovering the vehicle, detectives observed damage that appeared to match what would have been expected after fatally striking a pedestrian, and it was taken as evidence in the case. This led to the identification of Irion as a potential suspect.
Fresno PD arrested Irion, whom they found at a home on Lamona Avenue and Bond Street, and booked her into Fresno County Jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run causing death, vehicular manslaughter, and driving on a suspended license.
Pedestrian Hit-and-Runs in Fresno and Wrongful Death Claims
If it is proven in court that Irion was the driver at fault in this fatal pedestrian hit-and-run, then the family of the 78-year-old victim could have grounds for a wrongful death claim with her insurance provider. A wrongful death claim can provide grieving families with compensation for damages such as funeral costs and the loss of support and companionship provided by the deceased.
