Driver Killed, Passenger Injured in Fresno County Crash near I-5, Gale Ave

Fresno County, CA – On the afternoon of Thursday, June 18, 2026, a single-vehicle collision resulted in the death of a 67-year-old man and left a passenger injured, according to ABC30, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place just before 3:00 PM on Interstate 5 just north of Gale Avenue.

Authorities said the driver was traveling northbound in a 2006 gold Mercedes when the vehicle suddenly swerved into the dirt median, turned counterclockwise, crossed the northbound lanes, and ended up on the southbound side of the freeway, flipping over a guardrail and going down an embankment before landing on its side.

The vehicle was not visible from the roadway following the crash. A passerby in a red truck stopped and pulled both the driver and his passenger from the vehicle.

Responding units accessed the scene via a dirt road along the freeway near El Dorado Avenue. An air medical helicopter was requested to respond. The driver was given CPR but died at the scene. The passenger was transported to Community Regional Medical Center with severe injuries.

The coroner was notified and responded, delayed by traffic in the area. A tow was requested for the vehicle. Southbound lanes of Interstate 5 were reopened at approximately 5:09 PM following a traffic break.

The identity of the deceased had not been officially released at the time of reporting. The cause of the crash remains unknown. The investigation remains ongoing.

Single-Vehicle Collisions

In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s comparative negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages through a wrongful death claim.

Passenger Liability

A driver’s liability coverage extends to those inside their vehicle as well as outside. In many cases, those passengers are someone who knows the driver personally. So, when a passenger is injured and their driver is found liable, they may feel reluctant to file a claim against the driver’s insurance.

In many cases, however, a personal injury claim may be required for an insurer to offer a fair settlement that covers the injured party’s medical expenses, pain and suffering, and other damages related to the accident. A personal injury attorney can facilitate this process and, as a neutral third party, help navigate any emotional complexities that may arise.
