San Jose, CA – On the afternoon of Monday, March 3, 2025, a 50-year-old man was killed in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 101, according to NBC Bay Area and CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the crash occurred around 4:15 PM on northbound Highway 101, just north of the Capitol Expressway.
Authorities say the man was driving when he veered off the road and his vehicle overturned. Emergency responders arrived to find the driver with fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the crash but noted that the driver was the only occupant of the vehicle. Witness reports indicate that speed may have been a factor, though authorities have not confirmed whether impairment or distracted driving contributed.
The crash led to the closure of three lanes on northbound Highway 101, causing significant traffic delays. A SigAlert was issued, and Caltrans crews worked to clear the scene. By 7:47 PM, all lanes were reopened.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin. The investigation remains ongoing as CHP continues to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Single-Vehicle Collisions
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages.
