Salinas, CA – On the afternoon of Friday, June 5, 2026, a collision left a motorcycle rider and passenger in critical condition at the intersection of East Laurel Drive and Linwood Drive, according to KSBW.
The Salinas Police Department reports that the accident took place around 3:00 PM.
Authorities said the driver of a gray Buick made a left turn in front of an oncoming motorcycle after failing to yield to oncoming traffic while facing a flashing yellow arrow. The motorcycle rider reportedly did not have time to react before the collision.
Both the motorcycle driver and the passenger were transported to a local hospital, where they remained in critical condition at the time of reporting.
No additional details regarding the identities of those involved had been released at the time of reporting. The investigation remains ongoing.
Failure to Yield
In California, as in other states, “failure to yield” means that you didn’t give the right of way to the right person at the right time. As such, failure to yield or stop is closely related to the “right of way.” When a motorist fails to yield, stop, or otherwise avoid an accident and causes a crash, he or she can be held liable for injuries and damages suffered by a victim.
Personal Injury Claims & Comparative Negligence
Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s comparative negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility. Should evidence reveal that another party contributed to the injuries, victims may be eligible to file a personal injury claim with the responsible party’s insurance, which can provide compensation for medical bills and lost wages during recovery.
Passenger Liability
A driver’s liability coverage extends to those inside their vehicle as well as outside. In many cases, those passengers are someone who knows the driver personally. So, when a passenger is injured and their driver is found liable, they may feel reluctant to file a claim against the driver’s insurance.
In many cases, however, a personal injury claim may be required for an insurer to offer a fair settlement that covers the injured party’s medical expenses, pain and suffering, and other damages related to the accident. A personal injury attorney can facilitate this process and, as a neutral third party, help navigate any emotional complexities that may arise.
