Placer County, CA – In the early hours of Tuesday, May 26, 2026, a collision with a detached big rig trailer resulted in the death of Michael Fiscus, 57, according to ABC10, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 11:13 PM on westbound Interstate 80 near the Clipper Gap Road overpass.
Authorities said a big rig traveling westbound lost control and struck the center divider, causing its trailer to detach and cross over lanes into the path of oncoming traffic. Fiscus, who was driving a gray Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, collided with the detached trailer.
The driver of the big rig reportedly fled the scene on foot and was last seen wearing a black hoodie. The Placer County Sheriff’s Office deployed a drone with thermal camera capability to assist in locating the suspect, with a male matching the description located in the backyard of a residence near the scene.
The tanker trailer was confirmed to have been carrying water, and Placer Hills Fire Department determined there was no hazmat situation.
Caltrans implemented a closure with traffic diverted at Clipper Gap Road while emergency personnel worked the scene. All lanes were reopened at approximately 4:23 AM, with Caltrans personnel setting down concrete in the center divide as part of the cleanup effort.
The Placer County Sheriff’s Office identified Fiscus following the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
Ongoing Investigations
Victims of traffic accidents and their families should be aware that authorities may fail to note or even misinterpret critical evidence at a crash site. One of the services that a Personal Injury Attorney can provide is to pursue follow-up investigations, which can reveal additional evidence to correct any errors made by previous investigators.
Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence
Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s comparative negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility.
Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a wrongful death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
