Eric Daniel Garcia, 28, of Bakersfield, Killed in Hwy 58, General Beale Rd Crash that Ignited Star Fire

Kern County, CA – On the afternoon of Friday, June 19, 2026, a single-vehicle collision resulted in the death of Eric Daniel Garcia, 28, of Bakersfield, sparking a hillside fire that burned hundreds of acres, according to KBAK, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 4:30 PM on westbound Highway 58 east of General Beale Road.

Authorities said Garcia was driving a 2013 Hyundai Azera westbound at a speed in excess of the posted limit when, for reasons still under investigation, he lost control and struck a drainage ditch along the right shoulder. The vehicle continued out of control, overturned while descending the embankment, and Garcia was ejected. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Kern County Coroner’s Office formally identified him following the crash.

The vehicle and surrounding hillside caught fire following the crash, with flames reaching approximately 20 feet high and spreading across several acres along the roadway. Westbound traffic on Highway 58 was stopped approximately 1,000 feet east of the collision, with Caltrans implementing extended closures on westbound State Route 58 and State Route 223.

A four-wheel-drive tow truck with approximately 50 feet of cable was requested to access the vehicle via General Beale Road and a fire road. The roadway was fully reopened at approximately 9:12 PM.

CAL FIRE identified the resulting blaze as the Star Fire, which burned 577 acres before being fully contained as of June 22.

Investigators have not determined whether alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash. Anyone with information is asked to contact CHP Bakersfield. The investigation remains ongoing.

Single-Vehicle Collisions

In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s comparative negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages through a wrongful death claim.
