Fresno County, CA – On the afternoon of Friday, May 1, 2026, a single-vehicle collision resulted in the death of Penny Echan, 78, of Reno, Nevada, near Pine Flat Lake, according to KSEE/KGPE.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place on Trimmer Springs Road west of Maxon Road, with the vehicle discovered on Saturday, May 2, at approximately 8:40 AM.
Authorities said Echan was traveling westbound on Trimmer Springs Road when her tan Lexus SUV crossed into the opposing lane and went down a steep embankment. The vehicle overturned multiple times on the way down the embankment, ejecting Echan from the vehicle. She was found deceased outside the SUV. The Fresno County Coroner’s Office formally identified her following the crash.
Echan had failed to arrive at a planned meeting at Kirch Flat on Thursday evening, prompting a welfare check call to CHP on Friday afternoon. Officers, Fresno County Sheriff’s deputies, and aerial units from both agencies conducted a search of the area but were unable to locate her or the vehicle that day. A Fresno County Sheriff’s deputy sergeant discovered the vehicle and Echan the following morning.
Fire department personnel and a rotator tow truck with a flatbed were required to access and recover the vehicle from the steep embankment, with a hard closure implemented while crews worked the scene. Investigators have not determined whether drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
Ongoing Investigations
Victims of traffic accidents and their families should be aware that authorities may fail to note or even misinterpret critical evidence at a crash site. One of the services that a Personal Injury Attorney can provide is to pursue follow-up investigations, which can reveal additional evidence to correct any errors made by previous investigators.
Single-Vehicle Collisions
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s comparative negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages through a wrongful death claim.
