Bakersfield, CA – On the afternoon of Tuesday, May 5, 2026, a single-vehicle collision resulted in the death of Jackelline Romero and left the driver hospitalized, according to KBAK.
The Bakersfield Police Department reports that the accident took place around 4:56 PM in the 2600 block of South H Street near Wilson Road.
Authorities said a black Chevrolet sedan was traveling northbound on South H Street when it veered off the roadway and struck a tree in the center median. The vehicle was occupied by two women.
Romero, who was a passenger, was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel. The driver sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
A GoFundMe campaign has been established in Romero’s memory to help cover funeral expenses. She is survived by her 6-year-old son.
Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to contact the Bakersfield Police Department. The investigation remains ongoing.
Single-Vehicle Collisions
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s comparative negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages through a personal injury claim.
Passenger Liability
A driver’s liability coverage extends to those inside of their vehicle as well as outside. In many cases, those passengers are someone who knows the driver personally, a friend or relative. So, when a passenger is injured and their driver is found liable, they may feel reluctant to file a claim against the driver’s insurance.
In many cases, however, wrongful death claim may be required for an insurer to offer a fair settlement that covers the injured party’s medical expenses, pain and suffering, and other damages related to the accident. A personal injury attorney can facilitate this process and, as a neutral third party, help navigate any emotional complexities that may arise.
