Fresno County, CA – On the morning of Thursday, May 14, 2026, a collision resulted in the death of Alex Lopez, 28, of Kingsburg, according to KSEE/KGPE, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 7:30 AM on Academy Avenue north of Dinuba Avenue.
Authorities said Lopez was driving a Toyota Corolla northbound on Academy Avenue when the vehicle drifted onto the dirt shoulder. Lopez reportedly overcorrected to the left, causing the car to cross the roadway into the path of a southbound GMC Denali.
The right front of the GMC struck Lopez’s vehicle, with bumper and car debris scattered across all lanes following the impact. Both vehicles came to rest on the right shoulder.
Lopez was found unresponsive and sustained major injuries. Emergency personnel performed CPR at the scene before transporting him to Adventist Health in Selma, where he died from his injuries.
The incident was initially classified as a minor injury crash before being upgraded to a fatality. Two tow trucks were requested for the vehicles involved.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Ongoing Investigations
Victims of traffic accidents and their families should be aware that authorities may fail to note or even misinterpret critical evidence at a crash site. One of the services that a Personal Injury Attorney can provide is to pursue follow-up investigations, which can reveal additional evidence to correct any errors made by previous investigators.
Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence
Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s comparative negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility.
Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a wrongful death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
