San Luis Obispo County, CA – On the evening of Sunday, March 8, 2026, a vehicle-versus-motorcycle collision resulted in the death of Russell Palomino, 47, of Visalia, according to The San Luis Obispo Tribune, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 9:32 PM on eastbound Highway 46 just east of Geneseo Road.
Authorities said Palomino was riding a 2024 Harley-Davidson eastbound on Highway 46 at a high rate of speed when he struck the rear of a 2019 Toyota Corolla driven by Antonio Hernandez, 21, of Shandon, who was also traveling eastbound in the number two lane at a speed exceeding 65 miles per hour. The force of the impact caused the Corolla to travel out of control into the westbound lanes before coming to rest on the westbound right shoulder of the roadway. Debris was reported in the roadway following the collision.
Palomino was ejected from his motorcycle and sustained fatal injuries. None of the four occupants of the Corolla were injured. The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office responded and established flares in the number two eastbound lane while officers secured the scene. CAL FIRE was also notified and responded to assist. Both vehicles were towed to an evidence yard following the investigation.
All lanes were reopened at approximately 12:01 AM. Investigators have not determined whether drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the collision. The California Highway Patrol’s Templeton office is handling the investigation.
Ongoing Investigations
Victims of traffic accidents and their families should be aware that authorities may fail to note or even misinterpret critical evidence at a crash site. One of the services that a Personal Injury Attorney can provide is to pursue follow-up investigations, which can reveal additional evidence to correct any errors made by previous investigators.
Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence
Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility.
Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
