Shaver Lake, CA – On the afternoon of Friday, October 17, 2025, a single-vehicle crash claimed one life after a vehicle went over the edge of an embankment and fell roughly 100 feet in Fresno County, according to KSEE, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 12:30 PM on Highway 168 near Tollhouse Road and Vista Point.
Authorities said the vehicle left the roadway for unknown reasons and tumbled down a steep embankment before coming to rest approximately 100 feet below the highway. A small fire broke out following the crash, which Cal Fire crews quickly extinguished upon arrival.
Emergency responders, including CHP, fire personnel, and Forest Service units, reached the scene to assess the situation. Despite their efforts, one person was confirmed deceased at the site.
The Fresno County Coroner’s Office was notified and responded to the location. Tow crews later arrived to assist in recovering the vehicle from the embankment, and Caltrans temporarily coned off a lane of Highway 168 during the recovery process.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
Single-Vehicle Collisions
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages.
