UPDATE: Angelina Nino, 21, Rayla Piedra, 14, Killed in Belmont, Brawley Ave Crash in Fresno

Fresno, CA – On the evening of Tuesday, October 28, 2025, a single-vehicle crash claimed the lives of sisters Angelina Nino, 21, and Rayla Piedra, 14, according to ABC30.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 11:00 PM near Belmont Avenue and Brawley Avenue, just outside Fresno.

Investigators said that initial evidence suggests Nino may have been driving a white Kia at a high rate of speed when she allegedly failed to stop at a sign on Brawley Avenue. The vehicle continued east before abruptly turning off the roadway, where it struck a power pole, several trees, a fence, and a parked vehicle before coming to rest in a nearby trucking yard.

Nino was pronounced dead at the scene. Piedra sustained major injuries and was transported to a hospital, where she later died. Authorities confirmed that she was a student at Justin Garza High School in the Central Unified School District.

A 27-year-old man, who was also a passenger in the vehicle, suffered major injuries and remains hospitalized in serious condition. Preliminary findings indicate that the driver and front passenger were wearing seat belts, while the rear passenger was not.

Authorities have not yet determined whether alcohol or drugs were factors in the collision. The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the fatal crash.

Ongoing Investigations

Victims of traffic accidents and their families should be aware that authorities may fail to note or even misinterpret critical evidence at a crash site. One of the services that a Personal Injury Attorney can provide is to pursue follow-up investigations, which can reveal additional evidence to correct any errors made by previous investigators.

Single-Vehicle Collisions

In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages.

Passenger Liability

Driver liability insurance covers both those outside the vehicle and passengers inside. While it can be emotionally difficult to file a Personal Injury or Wrongful Death claim against someone close to the victim, the financial challenges after an accident can be overwhelming. As a neutral third party, an experienced personal injury attorney can help navigate these emotional complexities.
