Manuel Guzman, 36, Drowns in Crash into Fresno Canal near Chestnut, North Ave

Fresno, CA – On the night of Friday, July 25, 2025, a single-vehicle crash resulted in fatal drowning injuries to Manuel Guzman, 36, according to KSEE.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 9:00 PM near Chestnut Avenue, just north of North Avenue.

Authorities say Guzman was driving a Mercury Milan southbound on Chestnut Avenue when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle veered west and entered an active canal. Witnesses stated that Guzman exited the submerged vehicle and attempted to call for help, but disappeared underwater before emergency responders could arrive.

Search and rescue crews located Guzman’s body around 10:00 PM, approximately 80 feet from the vehicle. Officers performed life-saving measures at the scene before transporting him to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances of the crash, including what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway. No other vehicles or individuals were involved in the incident.

Single-Vehicle Collisions

In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages.
