Local California Highway Patrol officials found that a driver was in a blue Kia Forte headed north on the highway while four bicyclists were traveling south. For reasons that are still being investigated, the woman veered off the side of the road, where her vehicle struck the bicyclists and then a tree.
Paramedics and several other local responders were immediately dispatched. Two of the four bicyclists sustained traumatic injuries and were rushed to the hospital by medical helicopter. The other two suffered less severe injuries and were taken to the hospital by ambulance. The driver of the Kia, identified as an 85-year-old woman, sustained minor injuries and was not hospitalized.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the accident at this time.
