California drivers are required to make a full stop at a red light. Drivers also must stop at a red arrow and aren’t allowed to turn until they get a green arrow. They must also come to a full stop at the line provided.
California Vehicle Code (CVC) explains what drivers should do before they proceed on red.
(a) A driver facing a steady circular red signal alone shall stop at a marked limit line, but if none, before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection or, if none, then before entering the intersection, and shall remain stopped until an indication to proceed is shown, except as provided in subdivision (b).
(b) Except when a sign is in place prohibiting a turn, a driver, after stopping as required by
Accident Fault at a Red Light
In California, drivers must stop for a red light or a red arrow at a marked limit line (often a wide white line). They shouldn’t proceed forward into a crosswalk or a cross-lane.
Turns on a solid, round red light are permitted unless there’s a sign prohibiting the turn. But drivers still have to completely stop on the limit line. They should never make a “California stop” by rolling through the turn lane and only stopping if they see someone coming.
Yield to Pedestrians: Drivers should always yield to pedestrians, especially drivers turning on red. They should yield to vulnerable pedestrians even when drivers have a green light. It’s why stopping at the solid yellow line is important. It gives pedestrians room to cross and also allows more time and space for drivers to look in all directions before making their next move.
These laws are important when accidents occur, because in some cases, they can prove who caused a collision. Evidence is key, but when drivers break vehicle codes that govern intersections, it can be used as proof of their liability.
According to Evidence Code 669, showing the other driver ran a red light, or didn’t stop fully, can be all the proof needed for victims to get their medical bills paid and their lost time at work replaced.
A skilled California Car Accident Lawyer can also back your case with additional evidence, including surveillance video, to prove who made the mistake at a traffic light. Your case may also involve the data from an accident reconstruction team showing where the driver broke the red light laws.

What Does a Red Arrow Mean at a California Intersection?
Many California drivers are confused by a red arrow at an intersection. Some believe it’s okay to make a turn on a red arrow, but that’s not true.
In some cases, you can make a right turn on a round red light, but not on a red arrow. The red arrow means to stop and do not proceed until you get a green arrow.
Another section of CVC 21453 goes over this duty for drivers.
(c) A driver facing a steady red arrow signal shall not enter the intersection to make the movement indicated by the arrow and, unless entering the intersection to make a movement permitted by another signal, shall stop at a clearly marked limit line, but if none, before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection, or if none, then before entering the intersection, and shall remain stopped until an indication permitting movement is shown.
A driver who extends out into a crosswalk on a red arrow, or who tries to make a turn on a red arrow, can be fully liable for the damages caused in an accident.
