California’s 2024 Bicycle Crossing Intersection with Walk Sign Law

A new law taking effect in 2024 will give bicyclists a head start on crossing some intersections. It gives cyclists the same benefit of a “walk” sign as pedestrians already enjoy. It’s hoped the change can reduce bicycle vs. vehicle accidents.

New Intersection Walk Sign Rules Coming for California Cyclists

In 2024, cyclists at intersections with traffic lights and crosswalks will get a jump on traffic, the same way pedestrians do.

The amendment to existing vehicle codes allows cyclists to follow pedestrians in proceeding on a red light when a “walk” signal flashes.

Approved Assembly Bill No. 1909 describes the coming changes this way.

“…under existing law, a pedestrian facing a solid red traffic control signal may enter the intersection if directed to do so by a pedestrian control signal displaying “WALK” or an approved “walking person” symbol.

This bill would, commencing January 1, 2024, extend this authorization to cross the intersection to a bicycle, unless otherwise directed by a bicycle control signal.”

New Timing Patterns for Pedestrians and Cyclists at Crosswalks

A new concept called Leading Pedestrian Interval (LPI) will also end up helping cyclists when they get permission to cross with a “walking person” sign.

AB 2264 involving LPI was approved in 2022. It requires new crosswalks and traffic signals owned by the State of California to be programmed differently. They’ll give pedestrians an extra 3 to 7 seconds of lead time with a walk signal before motorists get a green light. Existing traffic signals that can be easily upgraded or programmed to do this would also need to change.

This lead time would allow pedestrians to get across dangerous intersections before drivers have a chance to hit them. Those on foot would also be further out in the crosswalk when drivers making right or left turns get a green light. The pedestrians would be easier to spot and drivers would be less likely to overlook them.

When bicyclists get the legal right to cross when a WALK sign comes on, this lead time will also help them get across a crossroads before having the chance to get struck by a driver.

A word for bicycle accident victims in California…

Changes in California bicycle laws in 2023 and 2024 should work together to give local cyclists a better chance of returning from a ride safe and sound. Unfortunately, careless and reckless drivers don’t always follow safety laws. They can send riders into accidents that cause traumatic injuries.

Fortunately, injured cyclists don’t have to face their medical bills alone. Maison’s Laws California Bicycle Accident Lawyers fight to make sure at-fault motorists and their car insurance companies provide full support for as long as the victim needs.
