How Do I Find Out if My Parent Went to Camp Lejeune?

The next of kin of military veterans are authorized by law to obtain copies of the official military personnel file (OMPF) of their father or mother. These records will be needed to determine whether the parent was stationed at Camp Lejeune. If he or she was stationed there, the records will also reflect when the veteran arrived at the base and when he or she was transferred or discharged out.

How Much Does It Cost to Purchase Camp Lejeune Military Records?

If the veteran was discharged from military service less than 62 years ago, there is no charge by the federal government to next of kin for basic personnel and medical records. If he or she was discharged more than 62 years ago, the records are considered to be archival, and a fee is likely to apply. A routine OMPF of five pages or less will cost $25. Six pages or more will cost $70. Most OMPF requests fall into this category. If your parent is known as a person of exceptional prominence (PEP), a fee of 80 cents per page applies. As soon as the cost is determined, you’ll be notified accordingly. An OMPF request can be made here.

Camp Lejeune Justice Act Eligibility Dates

The general rule is that a person claiming to be harmed by contaminated water at Camp Lejeune must have been on the base between August 1, 1953, and December 31, 1987. The minimum stay at the base is 30 days. Those days need not be continuous. The records sought will be critical in helping to determine eligibility for bringing a claim or lawsuit under the Camp Lejeune Justice Act (CLJA). If your parent is deceased, and you believe that his or her death was caused by contaminated water at Camp Lejeune during the time period mentioned above, wrongful death actions are permitted to be brought under the law.

Can a CLJA Lawyer Help Me Find Camp Lejeune Documents for My Parents?

Yes. Securing evidence and important documents is one just one duty of a skilled Camp Lejeune Contaminated Water Lawyer. Your attorney will be fully investigating what happened to you or a relative after contact with toxic water. Your attorney will research to find work records and military service records for your parents who are still alive or for those victims who have, sadly, already passed on. Medical records and birth certificates from decades back will be located and added as powerful evidence for your claim against the Department of Defense.

We will help you in determining whether your parent was at Camp Lejeune for 30 days or more during the above time span. You can contact us for a free consultation and case evaluation by our Camp Lejeune Justice Act lawyer here at Maison Law. Take notice that the statute of limitations for this law only extends to August 10, 2024, so time is of the essence. Exercise due diligence in seeking your father or mother’s OMPF so that any claim or lawsuit can be brought within the period prescribed by law.
