What is a Burn Center?
A burn center is a specialized hospital or department of a hospital with the staff and equipment to treat the most traumatic burn injuries. The burns involved are often life-threatening and require immediate care. Burn centers, also known as burn units, are certified to provide every medical service a burn victim may need in the present and in the months ahead.
They will have the best surgeons and nurses available at all hours in case of a burn accident. The staff may include plastic surgeons, general surgeons, pediatricians, psychiatrists, and social workers. Burn centers focus not only on the immediate care of the patient. They also provide focused programs that assist burn injury victims with adapting to life after they get out of the hospital.
ABA Verification
The ABA (American Burn Association) inspects and verifies some burn centers. According to the ABA, the verification is meant to help the government, third-party payers, patients, families, and accreditation organizations, to locate centers that provide high-quality patient care to burn patients from the time of injury through rehabilitation.
Some burn and wound care centers focus more on helping burn victims recover and resume as much of their normal lives as possible. Not all of these centers are ABA-certified. They’d focus on continued wound care and reconstructive surgeries. Many are plastic surgery-based, helping victims restore their appearance so they feel comfortable going out in public again.
The Burn Center at UCLA West Valley Medical Center is one such facility that also offers psychological counseling and burn survivor support.
