Los Angeles Bicycle Accident Statistics

Maison Law can help you through the claims process after a bicycle accident in Los Angeles. More people in Los Angeles are choosing bikes to get around. But this also means accidents–and they’re usually serious. Without the protection of a car, bike riders are more likely to get badly hurt in a crash. To that end, it’s helpful to look at the statistics to show just how often these accidents happen in LA. And if you or someone close to you has been hit while biking, we’re here to help you through what comes next–starting with a free consultation.

How Many Bicycle Accidents Happen in Los Angeles Per Year?

Given all the positives to bike riding in Los Angeles, it’s not surprising that biking is so popular. Whether you’re riding through Silver Lake, weaving past traffic downtown, or cruising the beach path near Venice, LA offers an impressive mix of bike-friendly routes and beautiful scenery.

But there’s another side to that story–accidents. Data from the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS) includes the reported number of bicycle accidents between 2020 and 2024. Here’s how those numbers break down year by year:

  • 2020 – 1,333 accidents
  • 2021 – 523 accidents
  • 2022 – 463 accidents
  • 2023 – 385 accidents
  • 2024 – 403 accidents

That averages out to about 621.8 bike accidents each year in the city. Every accident is different, but the impact often looks the same–serious injuries, a tough recovery, and lots of questions about what to do next. If you’re hurt and unsure where to start, it helps to talk with someone who knows how these cases work. Our team can guide you through the process by:

  • Looking into what caused the accident and explaining your options
  • Collecting the right evidence to support your claim
  • Handling conversations with insurance companies
  • Making the legal steps feel less overwhelming

Most people don’t think about legal help until the bills start piling up or the recovery drags on. If that’s where you are right now, we’re here to make things easier.

When Do Bike Accidents Happen the Most in Los Angeles?

Los Angeles offers a diverse landscape for cyclists, from beachfront paths to urban streets. However, certain times of the day pose higher risks due to things like traffic volume, road design, and infrastructure.

According to TIMS data, certain times of the day in Los Angeles have been identified as hotspots for bicycle accidents. Of the 415 bicycle accidents that were reported in 2024, the most happened on:

  • Saturdays between 3:00 and 6:00 PM – 20

This isn’t all that surprising, but let’s look at how the rest of the accidents were distributed:

  • Monday – 54 accidents
  • Tuesday – 56 accidents
  • Wednesday – 69 accidents
  • Thursday – 64 accidents
  • Friday – 63 accidents
  • Saturday – 49 accidents
  • Sunday – 60 accidents

What jumps out at us with these numbers is how steady bike accidents were in the middle of the week. This would suggest that bike accidents aren’t limited to weekends or late-night rides–they’re happening steadily throughout the week, with a noticeable spike midweek. Here’s a few reasons why:

  • Weekdays are riskier than weekends, probably due to heavier traffic during commuting hours.
  • Wednesday tops the list, which could be because of midweek rush and fatigue–both for drivers and cyclists.
  • Sunday’s high count is likely due to more people biking for recreation or exercise, especially in high-traffic beach or park areas.

While this gives you an idea of when you can expect bicycle accidents, it’s also important to understand how serious most of them are.

How Serious Are Most Bicycle Accidents in Los Angeles?

What makes bicycle accidents different from, say, car accidents is how damaging they can be to the rider. Whether this is you or someone you’re riding with, an accident can mean fairly serious injuries that you or your loved ones will have to deal with.

According to SWITRS data, bicycle accidents in Los Angeles between 2020 and 2024 resulted in 3,131 accidents total, but left victims facing:

  • Complaints of pain – 1,037
  • Visible injuries – 1,405
  • Severe injuries – 618
  • Fatal injuries – 71

These aren’t just statistics—they reflect how vulnerable you are when you’re hit on a bike. Most riders don’t have much protection beyond a helmet, so even a relatively low-speed crash can lead to long-term damage from things like:

  • Head trauma and concussions
  • Broken or fractured bones
  • Neck and back injuries
  • Spinal cord damage
  • Deep cuts, bruises, and road rash

To lower your risk, always wear a helmet, use bright or reflective gear, stick to designated bike lanes when possible, and make sure your bike is equipped with lights. But even when you do everything right, accidents can still happen.

What Age Groups Are Usually Involved in Bicycle Accidents in Los Angeles?

Another huge aspect of bicycle accidents in Los Angeles is pretty easy to understand: they happen to riders of all ages. Obviously, certain age groups–particularly younger and older riders–are more susceptible. However, TIMS data showed just how widely distributed bike accidents were in relation to age in Los Angeles. Of the 3,215 bike accident victims between 2020 and 2024, here’s which age groups were usually involved:

  • 14 or younger – 166 accidents
  • 15 to 19 years old – 301 accidents
  • 20 to 24 years old – 282 accidents
  • 25 to 29 years old – 346 accidents
  • 30 to 34 years old – 358 accidents
  • 35 to 39 years old – 312 accidents
  • 40 to 44 years old – 276 accidents
  • 45 to 49 years old – 253 accidents
  • 50 to 54 years old – 277 accidents
  • 55 to 59 years old – 233 accidents
  • 60 to 64 years old – 186 accidents
  • 65 to 69 years old – 129 accidents
  • 70 to 74 years old – 54 accidents
  • 75 to 79 years old – 35 accidents
  • 80 to 84 years old – 7 accidents

Bike accidents in Los Angeles don’t just affect one type of rider. Kids, teens, adults, and even older riders have all been involved in accidents across the city. While a large number of accidents involved riders between 25 and 39–many of whom were commuting or biking for exercise–younger riders and seniors are also at risk. And for older adults, the injuries are often more serious.

No matter what your age is, a bike accident can change everything in an instant.
