The Care Provided at Trauma Centers
Trauma Centers are usually an extension of a hospital’s emergency department. California Authorities determine what hospitals receive these designations. Hospitals can be named Level I (the highest) to Level IV facilities. There are also Pediatric Trauma Centers.
Trauma certification is assigned by a Local Emergency Medical Services Agency (LEMSA). Some hospitals are designated Trauma Centers by the American College of Surgeons (ACS).
These centers will often care for victims who suffer from blunt-force trauma injuries (e.g., falls and traffic collisions). Burn victims, gunshot victims, and stabbing victims will usually be rushed to the nearest trauma team.
