Shafter, CA — Eden Renae Lopez, of Bakersfield, and Emanuel Ramirez, of Shafter, both 18, have been identified as the two men killed in a single-vehicle rollover collision in the early hours of Saturday, October 24, 2026, according to KGET.
Previous reporting incorrectly identified both men as being residents of Shafter.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the fatal accident took place around 1:32 AM west of Scaroni Avenue on West Lerdo Highway in a rural area of Shafter.
According to investigators, Lopez was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado eastbound on Lerdo Highway with Ramirez as his passenger. For reasons yet to be determined, Lopez appeared to lose control of the vehicle, which left the roadway and rolled over on the north shoulder.
The impact launched both men from the vehicle. Emergency responders pronounced both dead at the scene.
Investigators have not yet determined whether driver impairment from either alcohol or drugs played a role. This is an ongoing investigation.
Single-Vehicle Accidents in Shafter and Wrongful Death Claims
It cannot always be assumed that the driver bears full responsibility in a single-vehicle accident. If the negligence of outside parties, such as the vehicle manufacturer or a government entity responsible for roadway maintenance, shares in liability, Lopez’s family may have grounds to make a wrongful death claim.
However, Ramirez’s family may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim against an outside party, Lopez himself, or both.
A wrongful death claim can provide compensation for damages such as funeral expenses and the loss of support and companionship from the deceased.
