Motorcyclist Richard Eugene Mustachia, 69, of Washington, UT, Killed in Lake Isabella Crash on Hwy 178 near Sierra Way

Kern County, CA — Richard Eugene Mustachia, 69, of Washington, Utah, has been identified as the motorcyclist who lost his life in a single-vehicle collision on the morning of Sunday, October 4, 2026, according to KGET.

The Kern County Coroner’s Office reports that the fatal accident took place around 9:00 AM on Highway 178, north of Patterson Lane.

According to investigators with the California Highway Patrol, Mustachia was riding his motorcycle when, for reasons yet to be determined, it crashed into a ditch of dirt and rocks, ejecting him from the vehicle.

Emergency responders provided Mustachia with transportation to Kern Valley Health District for treatment. However, despite the life-saving efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his wounds less than an hour later.

While details regarding what may have caused the fatal accident remain unclear, CHP has stated that they do not believe rider impairment from drug or alcohol use to be a factor.

Fatal Motorcycle Crashes in Kern County

When investigating a single-vehicle motorcycle crash, it cannot be presumed that the rider was entirely at fault. Furthermore, California law operates under the principle of comparative negligence, which holds that liability can be shared among multiple parties.

If the negligence of an outside party — such as a government agency responsible for highway maintenance in the case of dangerous road conditions — contributed to the crash that ended Mustachia’s life, his family may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. A wrongful death claim allows grieving families to seek compensation for damages such as funeral expenses and the loss of support and companionship provided by the deceased.

However, if Mustachia’s own negligence also contributed to the accident, any settlement may be reduced in proportion to his share of liability.

If a government entity responsible for roadway maintenance was found to be at fault in the accident, Mustachia’s family would face a tighter deadline to file a claim. Claims made against government entities in California generally have six months from the accident to file.
