Driver of Fresno Homeless Shelter Truck Injured, Power Pole Downed in Shields, Sierra Vista Ave Crash

Fresno, CA – On the afternoon of Thursday, September 3, 2026, a two-vehicle collision involving a truck owned by Fresno’s Poverello House resulted in a downed power pole and left a driver injured, according to KSEE/KGPE.

The Fresno Police Department reports that the accident took place around 1:30 PM in the area of Shields and Sierra Vista Avenues.

Authorities said that the Poverello House truck was pulling a trailer owned by the City of Fresno as it was traveling westbound on Shields Avenue when a sedan traveling in the opposite direction attempted to turn left in front of it. The truck driver attempted to steer around the sedan but lost control, striking a power pole.

As a result of the impact, the sedan’s driver, described as an older woman, had to be extricated from her vehicle and was treated for a possible broken ankle before being transported to the hospital. The driver of the truck was not injured.

A crew later arrived to repair the downed power pole. The investigation remains ongoing.

Fresno Car Accidents and Personal Injury Claims

California law requires drivers making a left turn across oncoming traffic to yield the right of way and ensure the turn can be completed safely before proceeding. When a driver turns into the path of oncoming traffic and causes another vehicle to lose control, that driver may bear liability for the resulting injuries, even where the other driver’s own evasive maneuver directly caused the impact.

The woman injured in this collision may have the right to pursue a personal injury claim, which can provide compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages related to the accident. Given that the crash also caused property damage to a utility pole, the City of Fresno or the utility provider could separately seek recovery for repair costs, though that claim would proceed independently from the injured driver’s case.
