Santa Cruz, CA – In the early hours of Thursday, August 13, 2026, a vehicle drove off West Cliff Drive into the ocean, resulting in the death of Alli Singh, 19, of Selma, and leaving another person injured, according to KSBW.
The Santa Cruz Fire Department reports that the incident took place around 12:50 AM near Steamer Lane.
Authorities said Santa Cruz Regional 911 received a call reporting that a vehicle had driven off the cliff and into the water. First responders arrived to find one victim who had gotten themselves out of the submerged car and sustained minor injuries. Rescue swimmers from Santa Cruz Fire then entered the water to search for Singh, who remained inside the vehicle.
Singh was extracted from the submerged car and transported to a nearby medical facility. She later died at the hospital. Swimmers confirmed no additional victims were inside the vehicle. The Santa Cruz County coroner’s office formally identified her following her death.
Singh, who was most recently living in Santa Cruz, was confirmed by UC Santa Cruz to have been a student at the university. In a statement, the university said it was heartbroken to learn of the loss and extended condolences to Singh’s family and friends, adding that support resources were being made available to those affected. The Santa Cruz Police Department is handling the investigation.
All five units from Santa Cruz Fire responded to the scene, along with three units from the Central Fire District, a battalion chief from Scotts Valley Fire, and the Santa Cruz Police Department. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Santa Cruz Car Accidents and Wrongful Death Claims
California law follows the principle of comparative negligence. This means that even if a driver is found partially at fault for an accident, they or their surviving family members may still pursue compensation if the negligence of another party, such as inadequate roadway barriers along a cliffside road, contributed to the crash. Investigators with California law enforcement examine roadway conditions and the circumstances of the crash to determine what role outside factors may have played.
Singh’s family may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim, while the surviving victim may have the right to pursue a personal injury claim. These claims can provide compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages related to the accident.
Passenger Liability and Wrongful Death Claims
A driver’s liability coverage extends to those inside their vehicle as well as outside. In many cases, those passengers are someone who knows the driver personally. So, when a passenger is injured and their driver is found liable, they may feel reluctant to file a claim against the driver’s insurance.
In many cases, however, a wrongful death claim may be required for an insurer to offer a fair settlement. A personal injury attorney can facilitate this process and, as a neutral third party, help navigate any emotional complexities that may arise.
