Santa Cruz, CA – In the early hours of Thursday, August 13, 2026, a vehicle drove off West Cliff Drive into the ocean near Steamer Lane, resulting in one death and leaving another person injured, according to KSBW.
The Santa Cruz Fire Department reports that the incident took place around 12:50 AM.
Authorities said Santa Cruz Regional 911 received a call reporting that a vehicle had driven off the cliff and into the water. First responders arrived to find one victim who had gotten themselves out of the submerged car and sustained minor injuries. Rescue swimmers from Santa Cruz Fire then entered the water to search for a second victim who remained inside the vehicle.
That victim was extracted from the submerged car and transported to a nearby medical facility. They later died at the hospital. Swimmers confirmed no additional victims were inside the vehicle.
All five units from Santa Cruz Fire responded to the scene, along with three units from the Central Fire District, a battalion chief from Scotts Valley Fire, and the Santa Cruz Police Department. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
