Sacramento, CA – A judge has ordered Ruby Lorenzo, 24, held without bail in connection with the death of Onias Rodriguez Alvila, 42, a Caltrans subcontractor killed in a suspected DUI hit-and-run on Highway 50, according to ABC10.
Rodriguez Alvila was struck and killed just after midnight on Monday, August 10, 2026, while working on Highway 50 near Stockton Boulevard.
Lorenzo, driving under the influence, crashed into two vehicles before striking him. The impact was strong enough to launch him off the roadway, and he died from his injuries. Two of his coworkers were also struck and hospitalized.
Lorenzo was arraigned Wednesday in a courtroom where both families were present. Prosecutors said Lorenzo reached speeds of 100 mph while attempting to flee after striking Rodriguez Alvila, and that she admitted to drinking and driving, testing at more than twice the legal limit. She reportedly fled the scene, striking a second vehicle before CHP located and arrested her near 65th Street.
The judge determined Lorenzo posed a danger to the public and ordered her back into custody, hours after she had posted bail following her initial arrest.
Both parties acknowledged in court that Lorenzo has no prior criminal record, and her attorney said the crash was not intentional. Rodriguez Alvila’s family has asked for privacy as they grieve. A GoFundMe has been established to support Alvila’s family.
The investigation remains ongoing.
