Sacramento, CA – Just after midnight on Monday, August 10, 2026, a suspected DUI hit-and-run resulted in the death of a Caltrans contract construction worker in his mid-40s, according to ABC10, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 12:27 AM on eastbound Highway 50 near Stockton Boulevard.
Authorities said the woman was driving eastbound on Highway 50 when she swerved into a Bay Line Cutting and Coring construction truck and struck the worker, knocking him off the highway. He landed on Stockton Boulevard, where he died from his injuries. Two other workers inside the construction truck were also struck and transported to the hospital.
Fire department personnel responded to the scene via city streets and entered the freeway against traffic from the Stockton Boulevard on-ramp due to the closure. A SigAlert was issued closing all eastbound lanes of Highway 50 in Sacramento County with no estimated time of opening. Traffic was diverted and backed up to the 47th Avenue off-ramp during the closure. An evidence tow was requested for one of the vehicles involved. The coroner was notified and responded.
The eastbound closure remained in place into the early morning hours, with vehicles exiting at 35th Street and detouring to 59th Street, while the 65th Street on-ramp remained available.
The woman fled the scene after the initial collision and struck a second vehicle on the highway. The driver of that vehicle called 911, and CHP responded to the area of 65th Street, where the woman was arrested. Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the crash.
The investigation remains ongoing.
