Fatal Head-on Crash Involving Tesla at Niclaus, Canal Rd in Placer County

Placer County, CA – On the afternoon of Thursday, July 2, 2026, a head-on collision resulted in the death of a 61-year-old Lincoln man, according to KCRA, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 3:02 PM at 7215 Nicolaus Road near Canal Road.

Authorities said a black Toyota Camry driven by the Lincoln man was traveling westbound on Nicolaus Road when it collided head-on with a white Tesla Model 3 traveling eastbound.

Preliminary evidence suggests the Toyota crossed over the double yellow lines into the opposite lane, although investigators noted there were no witnesses to conclusively confirm which vehicle crossed the center line. Both vehicles were retained as evidence.

Detectives will conduct a data download from the Tesla and inspect both vehicles as part of the ongoing investigation. Debris was scattered across the roadway following the impact. The Toyota driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two evidence tows were requested for the vehicles involved. The investigation remains ongoing.

Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence

Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s comparative negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility.

Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a wrongful death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
