Placer County, CA – In the early hours of Tuesday, May 26, 2026, a hit-and-run collision with a detached big rig trailer resulted in the death of Michael Fiscus, 57, and led to the arrest of Robert Bell, 60, of Stockton, according to KCRA.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 11:12 PM on westbound Interstate 80 near the Clipper Gap Road overpass.
Authorities said a big rig hauling a tank-trailer of water lost control while traveling westbound and struck the center divider, causing the trailer to separate and enter the eastbound lanes.
Fiscus, who was driving a pickup truck eastbound, collided with the detached trailer and died as a result of the crash. Bell, the driver of the big rig, fled the scene on foot following the collision.
The Placer County Sheriff’s Office deployed a drone with thermal camera capability to assist in locating the suspect, with a male matching the description located in the backyard of a residence near the scene at the time, though he was not apprehended that night.
Officers located Bell in Martinez on June 18, weeks after the crash, and took him into custody in coordination with members of the Placer County Regional Auto Theft Task Force. Bell faces felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter charges.
CHP Auburn credited the arrest to the dedication of investigators and allied law enforcement partners in seeking justice for Fiscus and his family. The investigation remains ongoing.
Ongoing Investigations
Victims of traffic accidents and their families should be aware that authorities may fail to note or even misinterpret critical evidence at a crash site. One of the services that a Personal Injury Attorney can provide is to pursue follow-up investigations, which can reveal additional evidence to correct any errors made by previous investigators.
Hit-and-Runs and Wrongful Death Claims
The compensation provided by a wrongful death claim can financially support families grieving the loss of a loved one due to another person’s negligence. These funds can go toward hospital bills, burial expenses, and help support any dependents of the deceased.
In cases where the at-fault party escapes justice, families may still be able to pursue compensation through their own uninsured driver coverage. A personal injury attorney can offer guidance on what options they may have available and negotiate with insurance companies to ensure that victims receive the best settlement possible.
