Kern County, CA – On the afternoon of Tuesday, June 2, 2026, a chain-reaction collision near Shafter resulted in the death of Daniel Ortega, 20, of Shafter, and left two others hospitalized, according to KGET.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 4:06 PM on eastbound 7th Standard Road at Poplar Avenue.
Authorities said Ortega was driving a Honda Civic eastbound on 7th Standard Road when he stopped to wait for westbound traffic to clear before making a left turn onto Poplar Avenue.
The driver of a white Chevrolet pickup allegedly approached from behind and struck the Honda, pushing it into the westbound lanes where it collided with a second Honda Civic that was making a right turn onto Poplar Avenue.
Ortega was transported to Kern Medical, where he was pronounced dead approximately 40 minutes after the crash. The Kern County Coroner’s Office formally identified him following his death.
The drivers of the Chevrolet pickup and the second Honda Civic were also transported to Kern Medical with injuries. Alcohol and drugs are not suspected to have been factors in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
