Maria Fife, 35, of Tracy, and Boy, 5, Killed, 2 Others Injured after SUV Crashes from Hwy 50 into American River

El Dorado County, CA – On the afternoon of Monday, May 26, 2026, a single-vehicle collision resulted in the deaths of Maria Fife, 35, of Tracy, and a 5-year-old boy, after a Hyundai SUV crashed into the American River, according to KCRA, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 4:00 PM on eastbound Highway 50 just east of Ice House Road, near the south side of the American River.

Authorities said the SUV appeared to have lost control in a curve during rainy conditions and went off the roadway down a steep embankment into the river, coming to rest approximately 500 feet from the road. The vehicle was carrying two adults and two children at the time of the crash.

Fife was pronounced dead at the scene. The 5-year-old boy was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. An 11-year-old boy sustained serious injuries and a 41-year-old man, also from Tracy, sustained injuries. They were transported for treatment, with an officer dispatched to UC Davis Medical Center to speak with the transported party.

Good Samaritans who witnessed the crash or arrived immediately after worked to reach those in the vehicle before first responders arrived, with one bystander sustaining injuries to his legs and knees while attempting to descend the embankment.

CAL FIRE and the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. The El Dorado County Coroner was notified.

An evidence tow requiring at least 100 feet of cable was requested for the vehicle, which had gone down a steep embankment. Caltrans was requested, with crew and signs for an extended road closure during the vehicle recovery.

One-way traffic control was in effect for several hours, with the scene cleared just after 8:00 PM. Unsafe speed for conditions is suspected as a likely cause, with alcohol ruled out as a factor. The investigation remains ongoing.

Ongoing Investigations

Victims of traffic accidents and their families should be aware that authorities may fail to note or even misinterpret critical evidence at a crash site. One of the services that a Personal Injury Attorney can provide is to pursue follow-up investigations, which can reveal additional evidence to correct any errors made by previous investigators.

Single-Vehicle Collisions

In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s comparative negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages through a wrongful death claim.

Passenger Liability

A driver’s liability coverage extends to those inside their vehicle as well as outside. In many cases, those passengers are someone who knows the driver personally. So, when a passenger is injured and their driver is found liable, they may feel reluctant to file a claim against the driver’s insurance.

In many cases, however, a personal injury claim or wrongful death claim may be required for an insurer to offer a fair settlement that covers the injured party’s medical expenses, pain and suffering, and other damages related to the accident. A personal injury attorney can facilitate this process and, as a neutral third party, help navigate any emotional complexities that may arise.
