Davenport, CA – On the afternoon of Monday, May 18, 2026, a 58-year-old Santa Rosa man lost his life after his car plunged more than 400 feet off a cliff onto a beach, according to KSBW, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 12:48 PM on State Route 1, approximately one mile north of Scott Creek Bridge near mile marker 34.22.
Authorities said the man was driving a black 2017 Honda Pilot southbound on State Route 1 when the vehicle departed the west edge of the roadway, struck a call box, continued through vegetation, and went over the cliff.
A witness at the scene reported observing the vehicle go over the side. It reportedly came to rest approximately 400 feet down the cliff in the surf zone, with heavy waves pounding the wreckage.
Due to the extremely steep terrain, there was no direct access route for first responders. Two Santa Cruz County Marine Safety lifeguards staged at Greyhound Rock County Park and ran and swam nearly a mile to reach the driver, who had been ejected from the vehicle into the water.
The lifeguards pulled the man from the water and performed CPR until he was hoisted off the beach via long-line to the cliff above, where resuscitation efforts continued. Despite these efforts, he was pronounced dead.
CAL FIRE, State Parks, the California Highway Patrol, and lifeguard units all coordinated the rescue response. The coroner was notified and responded to the scene. Vehicle recovery from the beach was planned for a later date, as the terrain and conditions prevented same-day retrieval.
An autopsy was expected to help determine whether drugs, alcohol, or a medical emergency played a role in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.
Single-Vehicle Collisions
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s comparative negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages through a wrongful death claim.
