Stanislaus County, CA – In the early hours of Thursday, May 7, 2026, a single-vehicle collision with a utility pole resulted in a fatality, according to KCRA, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 3:50 AM on Kasson Road south of Durham Ferry Road.
Authorities said a gold Honda Accord departed the roadway and caught fire, with flames visible from underneath the vehicle upon initial reports. Responding units arrived to find the vehicle fully engulfed. One fatality was confirmed inside the vehicle.
Stockton Fire Department responded to extinguish the fire, with foam and mud debris requiring a subsequent washdown of the roadway before it could be reopened.
The collision also struck a high-voltage utility pole, which remained upright. PG&E was notified and requested to inspect the pole at their convenience, with the pole number provided to utility crews. The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office was contacted to respond in its capacity as coroner.
A flatbed tow truck was requested for the completely burned vehicle following the conclusion of on-scene proceedings. The roadway was reopened at approximately 7:27 AM.
No additional details regarding the identity of the deceased had been released at the time of reporting. The investigation remains ongoing.
Single-Vehicle Collisions
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s comparative negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages through a wrongful death claim.
