San Mateo County, CA – In the early hours of Saturday, May 2, 2026, a collision on the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge resulted in one fatality and left another driver hospitalized with major injuries, according to KRON, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 1:10 AM on eastbound State Route 92.
Authorities said the collision involved either a black Cadillac and a white Acura, with both vehicles sustaining major damage. The Cadillac overturned on its roof, with the driver remaining trapped inside, while the Acura came to rest in the slow lane with the driver standing on the right shoulder.
Bystanders at the scene attempted to break the window of the Cadillac, which had been initially reported as a Tesla, to assist trapped occupants. The white Acura was also reported to have caught fire in connection with the incident.
The driver of the Cadillac died from his injuries. The driver of the Acura was transported to Eden Hospital with major injuries. A SigAlert was issued closing all eastbound lanes of State Route 92 east of the High Rise with an unknown estimated time of opening. Caltrans implemented a hard closure, with Foster City Police Department assisting with on-ramp management.
The coroner and the San Mateo County District Attorney’s office were notified and coordinated with responding officers. All lanes were reopened at approximately 6:12 AM following the completion of vehicle recovery and on-scene investigative proceedings.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence
Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s comparative negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility.
Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a wrongful death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
