Multi-Vehicle Crash on Hwy 1 near Carpenter St Injures 2 in Carmel

Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA – On the afternoon of Thursday, April 9, 2026, a multi-vehicle collision left two Carmel residents hospitalized with major injuries, according to KCRA.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place on Highway 1 south of Carpenter Street.

Authorities said a 96-year-old Carmel man was driving a Lexus sedan southbound on Highway 1 behind a Subaru sedan driven by a 24-year-old Oakland woman when, for reasons still under investigation, the Lexus veered left across the double yellow lines and struck a Honda SUV driven by a 78-year-old Carmel woman traveling northbound.

The impact caused the Lexus to return to the southbound lane, where it then collided with the Subaru. The driver of the Subaru reported no injuries.

The drivers of the Lexus and the Honda were transported to a local hospital with major injuries. Alcohol and drugs do not appear to have been contributing factors in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.

Personal Injury Claims & Comparative Negligence

Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s comparative negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility. Should evidence reveal that another party contributed to the injuries, victims may be eligible to file a personal injury claim with the responsible party’s insurance, which can provide compensation for medical bills and lost wages during recovery.
