Bakersfield, CA – On the evening of Monday, March 30, 2026, a pedestrian collision left a person hospitalized and resulted in the death of a dog, according to KGET.
The Bakersfield Police Department reports that the accident took place around 9:30 PM at Chester and California Avenues.
Authorities said a vehicle was traveling northbound on Chester Avenue and entered the intersection at California Avenue on a green light when a pedestrian walked against a red light and was struck.
The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital and was expected to survive. A dog accompanying the pedestrian was also struck and died at the scene.
The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Alcohol and speed were not factors in the collision, and no arrests were made. The investigation remains ongoing.
Duty of Care Toward Pedestrians
Drivers have a duty of care towards pedestrians, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for pedestrians near the roadway and, if a collision occurs, staying with the victim to ensure they get proper medical treatment and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.
Should the at-fault driver evade authorities, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine the best options in such cases.
