Driver Killed after Car Falls off Dock into Sausalito Yacht Harbor

Sausalito, CA – On the afternoon of Monday, March 17, 2026, a car plunged off a dock into the water at the Sausalito Yacht Harbor, resulting in the death of the driver and injuries to a firefighter, according to NBC Bay Area.

The Sausalito Police Department reports that the accident took place around 2:30 PM.

Authorities said the vehicle drove through the dock and plunged into the water, coming to rest approximately 10 feet below the surface. One passenger inside the vehicle was able to exit and reach safety, but the driver remained trapped inside the submerged car. The Southern Marin Fire District deployed a dive team to the scene to conduct the underwater rescue.

The driver was extracted from the vehicle and transported to a local hospital, where they were pronounced dead. A firefighter involved in the rescue operation was also injured during the effort but was expected to recover.

The cause of the crash and the circumstances that led the vehicle to drive off the dock remain unknown at the time of reporting. The identity of the deceased had not been released, pending notification of next of kin. The investigation remains ongoing.

Single-Vehicle Collisions

In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s comparative negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages through a wrongful death claim.
