Crash near US Hwy 50, Johnson Pass Injures 3 in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe, CA – On the afternoon of Monday, February 17, 2026, a pickup truck crash resulted in major injuries to three young men, according to ABC10.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 12:45 PM near U.S. Highway 50 east of Johnson Pass.

Authorities said the incident occurred on a snow-covered stretch of highway when a black Kia sedan was stopped in a turnout along eastbound U.S. 50. The driver of the Kia was attempting to adjust a tire chain on the left front tire, and two bystanders had stopped to assist. All three men were positioned near the left front tire, securing the chain, when the collision occurred.

Investigators determined that a black Chevrolet Silverado traveling westbound on U.S. 50 approached Johnson Pass and lost control on the snowy roadway. The pickup crossed into the eastbound lanes, striking the stopped Kia and the three pedestrians.

One of the men was thrown approximately 40 feet and came to rest on the right shoulder behind the Kia. The other two were dragged by the Chevrolet before being freed by passing motorists and Caltrans personnel who responded to help at the scene.

All three men were transported to Barton Memorial Hospital with major injuries. Officials have not released their conditions. Authorities stated that alcohol or drug intoxication is not believed to have been a factor. The investigation remains ongoing.

Personal Injury Claims & Comparative Negligence

Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility. Should evidence reveal that another party contributed to the injuries, victims may be eligible to file a Personal Injury Claim with the responsible party’s insurance, which can provide compensation for medical bills and lost wages during recovery.
