Lake Isabella, CA – The Kern County Coroner’s Office has identified 77-year-old Dennis Hervey Marineau of Lake Isabella as the man who was struck and killed while traveling in an electric wheelchair on the evening of Thursday, January 22, 2026, according to KBAK.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the fatal collision occurred around 5:58 PM at the intersection of Lake Isabella Boulevard and Crestview Avenue. Officers were dispatched after receiving reports of a crash involving a pickup truck and a person in an electric wheelchair.
CHP officials said a 72-year-old man was driving a 2002 Toyota Tundra northbound on Lake Isabella Boulevard as he approached Crestview Avenue. For reasons that remain under investigation, Marineau allegedly crossed Lake Isabella Boulevard in an easterly direction in his electric wheelchair and entered the path of the Toyota.
The pickup struck Marineau, causing severe injuries. Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene and determined that Marineau had sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators said the driver of the Toyota remained at the scene and cooperated fully with authorities. CHP officials noted that alcohol or drugs were not believed to be a factor in the crash.
The California Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Ongoing Investigations
Victims of traffic accidents and their families should be aware that authorities may fail to note or even misinterpret critical evidence at a crash site. One of the services that a Personal Injury Attorney can provide is to pursue follow-up investigations, which can reveal additional evidence to correct any errors made by previous investigators.
Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence
Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility.
Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
