Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash at Adobe, Frates Rd in Petaluma

Petaluma, CA – On the morning of Friday, January 23, 2026, a fatal multi-vehicle traffic collision shut down a stretch of Adobe Road near Frates Road, according to KRON, and additional reporting from CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the crash was first reported at approximately 5:49 AM on Adobe Road near Frates Road, east of Stage Gulch Road, also known as Highway 116. Initial information indicated a collision involving multiple vehicles that came to rest blocking travel lanes in both directions.

Authorities stated that the crash involved at least three vehicles. CHP logs described several vehicles stopped in the roadway, resulting in a full traffic blockage and the activation of hazard lights. Emergency personnel, including fire department units, responded to the scene to provide assistance and secure the area.

One individual was transported to Memorial Hospital with major injuries. CHP later confirmed that the collision resulted in at least one fatality, prompting notification of the Sonoma County Coroner. The identity of the deceased has not been released pending official notification.

Due to the severity of the collision, Adobe Road was closed between Frates Road and Stage Gulch Road to allow for emergency response, investigation, and roadway cleanup. Traffic was diverted, and additional closures were coordinated with Caltrans to manage westbound traffic near Highway 116.

CHP officers conducted a detailed investigation, which included documenting the scene, arranging evidence tows for the involved vehicles, and coordinating debris removal and roadway sweeping with county road crews. The closure remained in place for several hours as officials worked to ensure the roadway was safe for reopening.

An estimated time for reopening was not immediately available during the morning hours. The cause of the crash remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.

Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence

Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility.

Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
