San Joaquin County, CA – Driver intoxication is believed to be a factor in a head-on collision that left two people with major injuries in the early hours of Friday, November 28, 2025, according to FOX40.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 12:47 AM on River Road east of Cleveland Avenue.
CHP arrived to find two vehicles with significant damage. The 17-year-old driver of a Kia SUV sustained minor injuries, while two of the three passengers riding with the teen were transported by ground ambulance to Memorial Medical Center with major injuries. The severity of those injuries required immediate medical attention and extended on-scene coordination.
Investigators said 52-year-old Navin Sharma Kumar was driving a Mercedes sedan westbound on River Road when he lost control and entered the eastbound lane, striking the Kia head-on. CHP said Kumar fled on foot after the collision and was later picked up by a family member who drove him to his Modesto residence.
Authorities apprehended Kumar and reported that he showed signs consistent with intoxication. He was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on suspicion of felony DUI, felony hit and run, and driving with a suspended license. Officers also noted that he had an outstanding warrant at the time of his arrest.
