Tuolumne County, CA – On the morning of Monday, October 13, 2025, a fatal single-vehicle crash occurred along State Route 120 near Menke Ness Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
At approximately 10:03 AM, a white Jeep traveling westbound went off the roadway and crashed down an embankment. Moments later, reports indicated the vehicle had caught fire, prompting an immediate response from CAL FIRE and local emergency crews.
Firefighters and deputies arrived at the scene to find the vehicle severely damaged and resting on its roof. Rescue teams attempted to reach the occupant, but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
A recovery operation was launched to remove the wreckage, and a helicopter was requested for aerial support. Tow services remained on site through the late morning as evidence collection continued.
Traffic in the area was temporarily disrupted while Caltrans assisted with cleanup and roadway management. The Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office and CHP are investigating the cause of the crash. The victim’s identity has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
Single-Vehicle Collisions
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages.
Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence
Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility.
Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
