Fatal Pedestrian Crash at Olive Ave, First St in Fresno; DUI Suspected

Fresno, CA – On the afternoon of Sunday, August 17, 2025, a suspected DUI collision left a woman dead after a vehicle struck her on a sidewalk, according to The Fresno Bee.

The Fresno Police Department reports that the accident took place around 3:00 PM at the intersection of Olive Avenue and First Street.

Authorities say a gray Honda Accord traveled westbound on Olive Avenue when the driver lost control, left the roadway, and veered onto the sidewalk. The vehicle sheared off a power pole before hitting a pedestrian. The impact carried the woman approximately 70 yards into the middle of the intersection.

Emergency personnel responded to the scene and found the victim with major injuries. She was pronounced dead shortly after. Officials have not yet released her identity, pending notification of family.

Police identified the driver as a man in his 40s. Officers detained him at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence. Medical crews transported him to Community Regional Medical Center for evaluation of possible injuries.

The department’s Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate the circumstances of the deadly crash.

Pedestrian Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims

Drivers have a Duty of Care towards pedestrians, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for bicyclists with whom they share the road and, if a fatal collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.

For those who lose a loved one in a pedestrian accident, filing a Wrongful Death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.

Should the at-fault driver avoid legal consequences, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine the best options in such cases.

California DUI Law

Section 23153(a) of the California Vehicle Code (CVC) states that it is illegal for any driver to “Operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs and, as a result, cause bodily injury to someone else.”
