UPDATE: Juan Sigfredo Hernandez Melara, 42, Killed in Pedestrian Crash near South Union Ave, Taft Hwy in Bakersfield

Bakersfield, CA – On the night of Saturday, August 2, 2025, Juan Sigfredo Hernandez Melara, 42, of Bakersfield, was fatally struck by a vehicle, according to KBAK.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 9:29 PM on South Union Avenue, just north of Taft Highway.

Authorities say Melara was crossing the northbound lanes of South Union Avenue when he was struck by a 2010 Honda Civic traveling northbound in the number one lane. A 34-year-old woman was driving the Honda at the time of the collision.

CHP stated that the driver was unable to take evasive action before the vehicle hit Melara. Emergency personnel transported him to Kern Medical, where he was pronounced dead at 11:28 PM.

The driver of the Honda remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. She was also transported to Kern Medical and treated for minor injuries.

Investigators reported that alcohol or drugs did not appear to have been a factor for the driver. It remains unknown whether intoxication contributed to the pedestrian’s actions. The incident remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.

Pedestrian Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims

Drivers have a Duty of Care towards pedestrians, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for bicyclists with whom they share the road and, if a fatal collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.

For those who lose a loved one in a pedestrian accident, filing a Wrongful Death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.

Should the at-fault driver avoid legal consequences, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine the best options in such cases.
