DUI Suspected in Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash at Rio Linda Blvd, E Street

Rio Linda, CA – On the night of Saturday, May 31, 2025, a three-vehicle collision resulted in one fatality and at least one injury, according to KCRA, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 9:23 PM near the intersection of Rio Linda Boulevard and E Street.

Authorities stated that a Scion xB was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of Rio Linda Boulevard when it collided head-on with a northbound Chevrolet Tahoe. A Dodge Ram, also traveling northbound, subsequently rear-ended the Chevrolet. The impact caused major damage to all three vehicles and blocked lanes in both directions, prompting a full closure of the roadway for several hours.

The driver of the Scion was pronounced dead at the scene. Another individual involved in the crash reported pain and was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation. The identities of those involved have not yet been released pending notification of family members.

Preliminary findings suggest that the wrong-way driver may have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol. However, due to the driver’s death, toxicology results from an autopsy will be required to confirm impairment.

Emergency crews, including firefighters and towing services, responded to the scene to assist with medical aid, vehicle removal, and traffic control. The roadway was reopened to traffic late Saturday night after investigators completed their on-scene work. The cause of the crash remains under active investigation.

California DUI Law

Section 23153(a) of the California Vehicle Code (CVC) states that it is illegal for any driver to “Operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs and, as a result, cause bodily injury to someone else.”

Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence

Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility.  Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
