Multi-Vehicle Big Rig Crash at I-5, Jayne Ave Injures 1 near Coalinga in Fresno County

Coalinga, CA – In the afternoon of Thursday, May 1, 2025, a multi-vehicle collision involving big rigs resulted in major injuries and a temporary closure of Interstate 5, according to KSEE.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 4:00 PM near the intersection of I-5 and Jayne Avenue in Fresno County.

According to officials, the crash began when a big rig traveling in the number one lane struck another big rig ahead of it. The impact caused the first big rig to veer across the number two lane and off the roadway, where it collided with roadside power lines.

The driver of the first truck was ejected from the cab during the crash and sustained major injuries. Emergency crews airlifted the individual to a nearby hospital.

During the incident, a third big rig traveling northbound in the number two lane approached the scene just as the downed power lines began falling. One of the lines struck the truck, which subsequently collided with the second semi involved in the original crash. No other injuries were reported in connection with the secondary collisions.

The accident prompted an extensive emergency response, with crews from the Coalinga Fire Department and PG&E arriving on the scene to address the hazards posed by the downed power lines.

Interstate 5 was closed in both directions from Highway 198 to Lassen Avenue and Highway 269 for an estimated eight to twelve hours. Authorities reopened the freeway shortly before 10:00 PM.

PG&E crews remained in the area through the night to complete repairs to the damaged power infrastructure. The cause of the initial crash remains under investigation. CHP is urging anyone with information about the incident to contact the Coalinga area office.

Personal Injury Claims

After a traffic accident, victims and their families often deal with unexpected financial burdens, such as medical bills, lost income, and, in the worst cases, burial costs. A Personal Injury Claim allows accident victims to hold the at-fault party financially responsible for their cost of care.

Comparative Negligence

California Law upholds the concept of Comparative Negligence, which allows more than one party to share blame in a personal injury accident. Injured victims may have their compensation reduced if they are found partially responsible.
