Stockton, CA – On the evening of Sunday, April 13, 2025, a single-vehicle crash resulted in the death of one person, according to KCRA, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the accident took place around 6:19 PM on northbound Interstate 5, just south of Downing Avenue.
A 30-year-old man from Stockton was driving an SUV when the vehicle veered off the east asphalt shoulder, struck a metal guardrail, and went down a dirt embankment. The SUV then became fully submerged in a nearby slough.
Emergency crews from the Stockton Fire Department responded to the scene and pulled the vehicle to shore. The San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office dive team later recovered the driver’s body from the water. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities have not determined whether drugs or alcohol were contributing factors in the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
Single-Vehicle Collisions
In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages.
