Driver Killed Fiery Crash at Shore, Lake Rd in San Benito County

San Benito County, CA – A woman was killed in a fiery single-vehicle crash early Friday morning, April 11, 2025, on the border of San Benito and Santa Clara counties, according to KSBW, with additional reporting from CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports the accident occurred around 5:34 a.m. on Shore Road, just east of Lake Road. The vehicle reportedly struck a guardrail, overturned, and fell below a bridge before becoming fully engulfed in flames.

Emergency responders arrived on scene to find the vehicle ablaze in a creek bed, with flames spreading to nearby brush. Despite efforts from fire crews, the female driver was found deceased at the scene.

Initial reports indicate the crash was detected via an iPhone crash notification system. Witnesses described a large fire visible from the road, with no one seen escaping the vehicle prior to it exploding.

The woman’s identity has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin. Officials noted that identification may be delayed due to the condition of the body from the fire. CHP has not determined the cause of the crash at this time.

Single-Vehicle Collisions

In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages.
